Guilty Pleasures

Admit it—we all have them: Those small, simple, guilty secrets that make life worth living. Maybe it’s a favorite show, sports team, or a musical taste? Maybe it’s that childhood toy or game you could never quiet give up? Or maybe it’s a certain belief, opinion, or practice that brings you happiness to have hidden away? Either way, we all have them, they’re all secrets, and they’re usually just innocent fun—until you get caught.

I’m a simple man at heart but in this game of life I’m usually expected to be something more. People have their stereotypes and I come across as being athletic, handsome, and a jock so there’s a certain role I’m expected to play. People expect me to be a man’s man, rough and tough, good with the ladies and full of knowledge on sports and the great outdoors. I play my part well but I’m definitely more than the man on the surface—I’m a man with guilty pleasures. Yup, I have my secrets, and though they’re simple, they’d definitely raise an eyebrow with the company I keep—but what’s life without a few surprises along the way right?

Guilty Pleasure #1: I love to write – Most of my friends, and by that I mean all of them, have no idea I keep a blog. Technology, computers, and writing in particular aren’t the manliest of pastimes and though the ladies might like it, it’s usually something I keep pretty hushed up. People are generally either intimidated by writers or they’re annoyed by them and I rather just keep it a secret as long as I can.

I do love to write, and even though I’m far from the best, I absolutely love the art of it and I love to see myself improving. I still haven’t found my niche or groove but I’m keeping it simple, exploring my likes and talents, and enjoying the guilty pleasure of keeping it to myself. The world is full of judgmental people and it’s a shame we feel obligated to hide any part of who we are but I enjoy my secrets and who I am without having to hear others opinions about it.

Guilty Pleasure #2: I love Green Tea – Nothing in the world is better than sitting down for the night and boiling up a nice warm cup of tea. I love the taste of it, the sophistication, and the fact that it’s so healthy—the problem: It’s against my religion. So when that kettle starts to whistle its sweet tune, and my cup begins to give off that sweet aroma, I can’t help but smile and enjoy it much more than I probably should.

Guilty Pleasure #3: I love Video Games – Video games really have it hard these days with their nerdy stereotypes and the bad image they’ve been labeled with in the media—but I love them anyways! I’m currently sneaking my way through Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and just finished Dark Souls about a month ago and absolutely loved it! It can be hard not talking to anyone about them but that’s what makes it such an enjoyable guilty pleasure. Besides, even if I told my friends about my passion for games, I don’t think they’d believe me—It just doesn’t go with the stereotype I apparently fall into.
